Tell us a bit about Dr. Zeier’s professional track.

Dr. Alexander Zeiler has been an eminent figure in the IT industry
with more than 25 years of experience with SAP/IT systems. He is the
author of seven books and more than 150 publications. He has been the
key driver in the development of the in-memory database development of
SAP HANA. He has co-invented a number of in-memory technologies and
applications. He is also a visiting professor at MIT and a professor at
University of Magdeburg.
Currently he is the Chief Technology Officer at SAP Business Groups and
the Global Managing Director of In-memory Solutions. Furthermore, he is
the Director of Accenture Innovation Center for SAP HANA & Global
HANA CoE.

What is insourcing with respect to your industry?

Insourcing in our industry is all about in-house innovation. We work
towards innovative solutions and inventions in data management and
in-memory data solutions. This requires collaborative and secure
communications and developments which ensure that the development of
intellectual property takes place in a secure and consistent manner.
With insourcing we ensure that our operations and procedures are always
as per our own requirements and performed as per our own guidance.

Why is it gaining momentum in your industry?

Our core work lies in the development of innovative technologies of
memory management and data management applications. This is intellectual
property which needs to be developed in secure environments and
conditions. Moreover, in order to insure that consistent development and
growth takes place, we cannot afford to dilute the operations by
outsourcing certain segments and verticals to external agencies. We can
only be as strong as the weakest link. In order to ensure the
aforementioned elements, insourcing has been growing steadily in our
industry.

How can a CIO create a solid business case for insourcing?

The focus should be on the establishment of the long term returns and
long term advantages which the insourcing model can provide. When it
comes to business, the results should be quantifiable in the forms of
ROI. We can focus all we want on the most advanced technologies, but as
long as we are not able to define and justify substantial returns, it
will not be acceptable. Consequently, the business case should stem from
the technology and lead to the business advantages which insourcing can
provide.

What does the future hold for the insourcing development and industry?

We can safely say that insourcing will soon become an inevitable
inclusion in the industry and most organizations. Outsourcing used to
have its advantages with respect to cost effectiveness and ease of work,
but that is no longer the case. The costs have gone up and a number of
issues emerged. The future shifts towards an increasingly robust
insourcing model which ensures complete control and consistent
development of the services and products which the organization
provides.
