Why is it gaining momentum in your industry?

In an era of cost reduction, insourcing can help to remove
outsourcing costs. More control over processes will be an additional
benefit. These are two major reasons why insourcing has gained momentum
in the utility industry. We now make sure that our procedures and
operations are under our complete control so we are able to troubleshoot
better and provide our services in a much better manner.

Are organizations missing a trick by not creating a “Chief Insourcing Officer” post?

I think so. A Chief Insourcing Officer will help to retain talent
and improve in-house resources. The CIO would be able to make sure that
the insourcing transition and the path taken is correct and the correct
decisions are made while making sure that the talent is not just kept
in-house but is skilled up and re-skilled with the growth of the
technology.

How can a CTO create a solid business case for insourcing?

The first step is to empower internal resources, then create a
business case. And CTO/CIO position is the very best place inside the
organization to promote this kind of projects. The CIO and CTO must take
into account the profitable and long term benefits of the transition
which will make sure that year over year growth is represented in the
form of revenue and cost cutting paradigms.

What services lend themselves best to outsourcing in your industry?

There are many fields in utilities industry which are currently being
outsourced, as plumbers, GIS technicians, IT developers, IT system
staffs. This is our reality now, and the challenge is to change this
reality and invest in our internal resources, training them and giving
the budget, responsibility and power to make decisions and lead the
future of the company.
