Are organization missing a trick by not creating a “Chief Insourcing Officer” post?

completely agree that having a dedicated officer who can oversee the
entire insourcing transition and even before that, propose a business
case to undertake insourcing can be highly beneficial. The chief
Insoucing Officer can be the much needed guiding light to make sure the
initiation of the insourcing model culminates in something wonderful for
the company.

What according to you defines insourcing in your Industry?

The speed at which technology is evolving, the need to keep pace with
this evolution and make sure that we are at par with our expertise in
our own team itself without relying on any other entity or organization.
All this has led to insourcing and all this includes insourcing as its
main elements on which organizations are taking their decisions of
moving into insourcing.

Why is it gaining momentum in your Industry?

The market has become highly competitive and companies are running to
make sure that their workforce is skilled enough and is updated time to
time so that they don’t get lagged behind in their industry and are
continuously growing and innovating towards their development. Due to
such requirements, we are seeing an increasing gravitation towards
insourcing and its inclusion in the organizations and industries.

How is it better than the earlier pre-outsourcing situation?

Internal knowledge development and growth of the knowledge base is
the major change after the outsourcing trend. Organizations are now
realizing and focusing that they should focus more on the development of
their own knowledge base and their own workforce by skilling and
re-skilling them.

What services lend themselves best to outsourcing in your Industry?

We have found that services which are non-core such as Call center
and support services are the best ones to be outsourced so that the
organizations can concentrate more on their own core services and
operations.

What percentage of IT is currently insourced and how do you see it stabilising in two years’ time?

Currently we are 50% insourced and we believe that in two years time
we would increase it more to have more operations brought back home to
our in-house teams.

What are the key considerations for successful insourcing?

I believe the focus should be on the building of the teams in house
and making sure that they are taken care of both technologically and
with respect to human resourcing. Once the team is built up and the mind
set of taking responsibility of their own operations is done, it only
becomes a matter of maintaining the teams up to the mark and the growth
will be definite.

How can a CIO create a solid business case for insourcing?

The CIO can show that having the insourcing model will allow the
organizations in having the speed to react to any and all changes which
take place in the organization and especially with the growth and
development of technology. Having the knowledge base and team’s in-house
organizations can easily tackle any change which comes their way by
providing appropriate responses in a controlled manner.

What is the Insourcing Multiplier support that is essential for success?

The insourcing multiplier I believe will provide the necessary
support to the marketing area to make it grow and make sure that the
insourcing transitions and models are well understood amongst the
organizations and how to go through them to make sure the best support
and growth takes place.
