Why is it gaining momentum in your industry?
In our industry we always look to maximize the value provided by IT. This essentially means that we are not only looking new technology but also looking at how these new technology(s) changes the cost paradigm, allowing the business strategy to evolve. This can be made possible very easily through the insourcing models. Any new technology can essentially be used to improve upon the cost and budgeting models. It is through the insourcing solutions that these technologies can be adopted and put to use. Thus, insourcing needs to be strongly looked at by any respectable business leader.
How can a CIO/CTO create a solid business case for insourcing?
I can provide insight into this as I created a business case years ago for the same purpose where insourcing saved the organization I was working at, an amount of $2MM annually. I believe what the CIO/CTO needs to do is look at all the numbers, tangible and intangible benefits and really work with the data available to them while creating a business case. It really ends up being their responsibility to the organization and they shouldn’t just kick the can down the road. The requirement is to create a big picture which takes into consideration not just the short term but the long term benefits and year over year increments in savings and revenue.
What does the future hold for the insourcing development and industry?
I am a firm believer of insourcing and thus I firmly believe that insourcing will go a long way in changing and improving the landscape of the industry in which we work. We need to see how and what models of insourcing can be beneficial for us and accordingly make our decisions of providing the correct insourcing transition as and in the manner required by the organization.
According to you, how do we know when to insource and when to outsource?
The entire trick lies in the understanding of when to insource and when to outsource. We need to baseline what we have in terms of systems, infrastructures and human resources. Having this in hand, we will have a better understanding of what functions to outsource and what to keep in-house insourced. For insourcing itself, we need to re-baseline the systems and understand the infrastructure in place as compared to the outsourcing situation and accordingly plan the insourcing transition.
What will be the Insourcing Multiplier’s support in the insourcing growth?
The Insourcing Multiplier will in all probability will act as the door to understand why insourcing is important and consequently help more people gain advantage of the transition like my organization did. The information and knowledge resources being provided through the various features, news reports, research reports, white papers and more will act as the necessary path to take decisions when it comes to creating a proper insourcing transition.
